You already know birds are fascinating — but did you know they’re descended from dinosaurs? And that’s just the beginning. Birds possess astonishing “superpowers”: exceptional eyesight, acute hearing, and even a refined sense of smell, all of which help them thrive in every corner of the earth. If you’ve taken our introductory course, The Wonder of Birds, and found yourself hungry for more, you’ll love Into The World of Birds. This course goes a step further, deepening your knowledge and equipping you with the skills to become an observant, engaged birder.
In this self-paced journey, you’ll explore how birds live and experience the world through their senses. You’ll learn to “think like a bird” as you observe them in action. And here’s the fun part — you’ll also gain the tools to become a bird detective. What is it?
A multimedia, mobile-friendly, free online course designed to elevate your birdwatching with fresh insights into bird behaviour.
Who can take it?
Curious nature-lovers aged 14 and above. If you have basic English literacy and a smartphone with internet access, you’re all set.
How is it structured? In addition to the introduction videos, the course has four chapters, each broken into interconnected topics with videos that will guide you deeper into the world of birds. Chapters will be released progressively. Once you sign up, you will receive updates as new chapters are released.
Why Watch Birds?
Watching birds is about more than just identifying them by name. It’s about slowing down and taking in the little details. Like listening to the notes of a koel’s song or watching a kingfisher’s dive. And finding joy not just in spotting rare species but in the everyday birds around us.
Where did Birds Come From?
Hard to believe, but the chirruping sparrow on your balcony and the fearsome T. rex belong to the same family tree. Which makes birds, quite literally, living dinosaurs! Over time, feathered theropod dinosaurs evolved into the thousands of bird species we know today.
Chapter 1 - What’s it like to be a bird?
Birds thrive everywhere thanks to their incredible ‘superpowers’! From their fascinating feathers to their extraordinary sight, smell, and hearing, birds have it all. In this chapter, we’ll dive deep into each of these adaptations.
A bird’s feathers aren’t merely for beauty—they’re tools for survival. From insulation, camouflage, and waterproofing to flight, display, and even carrying water, feathers perform a range of functions. Discover more about how feathers make birds some of the most adaptable creatures on Earth.
How do birds fly?
From soaring over lofty Himalayan passes to crossing turbulent oceans, birds achieve extraordinary feats of flight thanks to their wings, streamlined bodies, and efficient lungs. Learn how different wing shapes, movements, and other adaptations make birds true masters of the skies.
Expressions like “a bird’s-eye view” and “eagle-eyed” say a lot about avian vision. From eagles spotting prey kilometres away to owls hunting in dim light, birds’ eyesight truly lives up to these claims. Birds are even sensitive to ultraviolet light, making them well-adapted for survival in every habitat.
How do birds hear?
Birds are exceptional listeners. Owls can detect the faintest rustle of prey. Penguins recognise their chicks in noisy colonies. A bird’s hearing plays a vital role in its survival across diverse environments. Birds’ ears are hidden inside the skull, and remarkably, they can even repair hearing damage.
